Welcome Sanctuary Friends!
NOTICE: In March 2010, the Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary suffered extreme damage from record heavy winter snows. The rescued cat facility, poultry and rabbit habitats, sheds and other structures have been severely damaged and need immediate rebuilding. This has stretched our budget beyond repair. Thus we desperately need your help to cover the cost of this crisis. The rescued animals at the sanctuary will be most grateful for your generous donation in rebuilding their habitats. All donations are entirely tax deductible. We appreciate anything you can do. Please click here to help.
The Heart and Soul Animal Sanctuary is a place of refuge for animals who otherwise would perish: The abandoned, the abused, the sick, the old, the suffering. Located on 130 wooded acres on a mountain near Santa Fe New Mexico, the Sanctuary is non-profit and tax-exempt. We also are an accredited member of The Association of Sanctuaries, a national organization with the highest standards for animal welfare and care.
Our founder and director, Natalie Owings, works at the Sanctuary 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without salary. She and the dogs live, family style, in the "Giant Doghouse" -- essentially a spacious room with 25 or 30 dog beds and one human bed.
The Sanctuary's Mission Is Two-Fold:
The First Mission is Rescue. We give each dog or cat immediate medical care. Each is spayed or neutered, vaccinated and rehabilitated physically and psychologically. We find loving homes for those who can be adopted. The rest live out their lives in peace and dignity at the Sanctuary.
Our Second Mission is to Teach children compassion and respect for all animals. The Sanctuary also is home to chickens, geese, turkeys, goats and donkeys, who serve as living lessons in humane education.
Want to visit?
We welcome visitors to the Sanctuary. We're located in Glorieta , N.M. , a 20-minute drive from Santa Fe . Please call for an appointment; afternoons between 12:00 noon and 5:00 PM are preferable. Call Natalie Owings at (505) 757-6817 for directions.
Our dogs don't live in pens or cages, so come prepared for exuberance and muddy paws. Before bringing small children, consider whether they might feel overwhelmed by a large group of dogs. And please, leave your own animals at home.
